Broadway Fete, Monday 2 August 1938

From the Cheltenham Chronicle:

Mr. Rupert De la Bere, M.P. performed the opening ceremony at the annual fete in aid of funds of Broadway Congregational church which took place at Luggers Hill on Monday, by permission of Mr. Clement V. Parsons. A large number of people were present, Mr. D.G.S. Russell presided at the opening ceremony, and introduced Mr. De la Bere, who in declaring the fete open, thanked Mrs. Kemp for her work. The Rev. Arthur Wakelin (Broadway Congregational minister), thanked Mr. De la Bere and Mr. Don Russell for their presence and keen interest, also Mr. Clement Parsons for lending his beautiful gardens, and all who helped. A feature of the programme was a baby show, and the judge was Dr. Dorothy Neate, of Fladbury, assisted by Nurse Green of Guiting. The prize winners were, under 12 months, 1 Olive Whitton, 2 James Brookes; over 12 months 1 Brian Clarke, 2 Jean Warren. Another attractive item, “The Pageant of the Flowers” was presented by Mrs. Jones’s pupils. A fine programme of music was played, under the direction of Mr. L.J. Hensley. There were a number of stalls and sideshows. The programme wound up with a well attended dance in the Lifford Hall, when music was played by Frank Styles and his band, from Wickhamford.

 

Programme of Events 2019/20 – First Meeting Monday 16th September 2019

The 2019/20 programme of events and talks starts on Monday 16th September. Meetings of the Society are held monthly on the third Monday of the month (except December) in the Lifford Memorial Hall starting at 7pm. Membership costs £10 (£15 per couple) and non-members are welcome to all of the meetings – £3 on the door.

September – December 2019 talks include:

Monday 16thSeptember: On the Way to London, an illustrated talk by David Ella on the old coaching routes across the North Cotswolds and Vale of Evesham which will include the history and role of the Fish Inn and the many other inns in Broadway.

Monday 21st October: Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bt (1792-1872). The Society looks forward to welcoming Gerard Molyneux, the great great great grandson of Thomas Phillipps to give a talk on his bibliophile relative who lived at Middle Hill and established a printing press in Broadway Tower.

Monday 18th November: Doug Eyre will be giving an illustrated talk entitled 1941, HMS Broadway and the Capture of the German Naval Enigma Machine. The US Navy Destroyer was commissioned as HMS Broadway in 1940 and refitted as a convoy escort, serving in the mid-Atlantic passage during the Second World War.

Monday 9th December: Hailes Abbey and the Mystery of the Holy Blood a talk by David Haldred on the holy relic received by the Abbey in 1270 which is believed to be a portion of the blood of Christ and how it transformed the monastery into one of the most important pilgrimage sites in England.

Apart from hosting talks, the Society conducts small pieces of research on Broadway’s history and publishes articles and images on this website, the Society’s Facebook page and its Twitter account (@BroadwayHistSoc).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Programme of Events 2019/20

Following the Annual General Meeting held on Monday 20th May 2019, the Society has released its Programme of Events for 2019/20. The meetings resume on Monday 16th September 2019 with an illustrated talk entitled ‘On the Way to London’ by David Ella on the coaching routes across the North Cotswolds, through Broadway and the Vale of Evesham.

David’s talk will start at 7pm on the 16th September and will be held in the Lifford Memorial Hall, Lower Green, Broadway.

A History Society for Broadway

Inaugurated in June 2015, Broadway History Society has been set up to:

  1. Promote the understanding of and study the history of the village of Broadway, in the county of Worcestershire.
  2. Arrange meetings, walking tours, talks and other events on a broad ‘history’ theme to include visits to local historical building or sites.
  3. To provide a forum for the reporting, debate and discussion of issues relating to Broadway’s history and to share knowledge of the community and local area.
  4. To be an educational and non-profit making society.

  • Monday 21st September, 7pm in Broadway Methodist Church Hall, an illustrated talk by Gordon Franks ‘The Centenary of the Lifford Hall’.
  • Monday 19th October, 7pm in Broadway Methodist Church Hall, an illustrated talk by Sarah McCormick Healy ‘Arts & Crafts in the Cotswolds’.
  • Monday 16th November, 7pm in The Community Room, The Court, Russell Square, Broadway, a talk by Jon Goldswain on ‘Elgar from Cradle to Grave’.
  • Monday 14th December , 7pm at The Court, High Street, Broadway. Christmas drinks and a talk by Michael de Navarro on ‘Mary Anderson de Navarro’.
  • Monday 18th January 2016, 7pm in Broadway Methodist Church Hall, at talk by Graham Downie on ”The Fairground Calendar’.
  • Monday 15th February, TBA.
  • Monday 21st March, TBA.
  • Monday 18th April, 7pm, venue to be confirmed. A talk by Liz Eyre on the Lygon Arms Hotel,
  • Monday 16th May. Annual General Meeting.
