Keyte (née Turner), Martha (1864-1947)

Martha Turner was born in Childswickham in August 1864, the daughter of Richard Keyte. Aged 20, Martha married Herbert Leigh Keyte (b. 9 Feb 1861), a stonemason, at St Barnabas Church, Snowshill, on 1st November 1884. Martha and Herbert had 10 children, all born in Snowshill.

In 1913, Martha and Herbert moved from the shop they ran in Snowshill to new premises on the Leamington Road in Broadway. Their youngest daughter, Elsie May (b. 1902), helped in the Broadway shop and took over running the shop when Martha died in 1947.

The shop, fondly known as May Keyte’s, was often referred to as the “Harrods of Broadway“.
