James Buckley Millsom was born in Bath, Somerset, C1822. He first ministry was at the Congregational Church in Wednesbury (1845-1848) before moving to Broadway where he was Minister of Broadway Congregational Church in 1851. The following year he moved to Ashwell in Hertfordshire where he was Minister for 41 years.
On 31 August 1852, James married Rebecca Frost Townsend. Rebecca, born in Broadway in 1823, was the only daughter of Deacon Richard and Sarah Townsend (née Frost). They were married by Rev Franklin in St Michael and All Angels’ Church. Rebecca’s father, Richard Townsend, was a grocer and Deacon of Broadway Congregational Church.
After retiring from his ministry at Ashwell, James and Rebecca moved to Cheltenham. James died, aged 85, at his home 6 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham, on 13 January 1909. His funeral service was held at Highbury Congregational Church in Cheltenham. After the service, he was conveyed in an open hearse to Broadway. He was buried in St Eadburgha’s churchyard, Rev Stephen Clark of Broadway Congregational Church conducted the service.
Rebecca Millsom died, aged 91, at her home 6 Rodney Terrace in Cheltenham, on 7 January 1914. Her funeral was held at Highbury Congregational Church in Cheltenham (conducted by Rev. S.S. Shrubsole) and she was buried alongside her late husband in the churchyard at St Eadburgha’s Church. Her interment was conducted by Revd Stephen Clark, Minister of the Congregational Church in Broadway, assisted by Mr John Morris.
