Society Cricket Match at Broadway

Publication: The Evesham Standard and West Midlands Observer, 8 July 1899

For some years past a reunion of prominent people in literature and art has been held at Broadway. The meeting originated with Mr A.F. and Madame de Navarro, and has always been most successful. The proceedings have included a cricket match but it as as a social gathering that the fixture has become so popular. This year’s gathering was held on Saturday, when the weather was most unpropitious. Still the cricket match took place. A team organised by Mr. Navarro, and captained by Mr. C.T. Smith, included Messrs. Plunket Greene, F.D. Millet, H. Herkomer, and Alfred Parsons. It was pitted against at team captained by Mr. J.M. Barrie, and included Messrs. Bernard Partridge, Owen Seaman, H.J. Ford, S. Pawling, E.T. Reid, and Augustine Birrell, M.P.  Mr. Navarro’s Eleven went first to the wickets, and after some amusing displays compiled a score of 89 runs, but Mr Barrie’s team surpassed this total. For the loss of two wickets they ran up over 100, Mr. Ford contributing 51 and Mr. Pawling 52. Despite the unfavourable weather the match was watched by a number of ladies, included Madame Navarro, Mrs. Barrie, Miss Maud Valerie White, Miss Griffin, and Miss Gwendoline Parry. Mr. Barrie bowled with considerable success. Sandwiched between the taking of wickets he provided no small amount of fun by strolling about the field with a big pipe in his mouth, a cup of tea in his hand and a large umbrella under his arm. The day’s enjoyment was somewhat marred by an accident to Miss Maud Valerie White. When leaving the ground she slipped, spraining her ankle badly. Mr Standring, who was playing for Mr. Navarro’s team, attended to her injuries.
